Pakistan is located in South Asia and it shares borders with India, Afghanistan, Iran, and China. It is  home to a rich tapestry of ethnic groups, languages, and traditions, united under the national language, Urdu. Pakistan's hospitality is renowned, with locals often going out of their way to welcome visitors. The country which is an Islamic republic operates on Pakistan Standard Time (GMT+5) and has a diverse cultural landscape shaped by its South Asian, Persian, and Central Asian influences.

Wine and cuisine

Pakistan’s cuisine is packed with flavours and spices. Must-try dishes include biryani, a fragrant rice dish with meat or vegetables, and nihari, a slow-cooked meat stew. Street snacks like samosas and pakoras are readily available, and desserts like gulab jamun and jalebi are a treat for those with a sweet tooth. Due to cultural norms, alcohol is not widely consumed.  A refreshing lassi, a yoghurt-based drink, is perfect for beating the summer heat.

For adventure lovers, Pakistan is a paradise. Trek through the Karakoram Range, home to K2, the world’s second-highest peak. Explore the lush Swat Valley, often called the "Switzerland of the East," or take a thrilling jeep ride through Deosai National Park. Health precautions

Before travelling, ensure routine vaccinations are up-to-date, and consider vaccinations for typhoid and hepatitis A. Drink only bottled or filtered water to avoid waterborne illnesses. Carry a basic first aid kit and any necessary prescription medication, as rural areas may have limited medical facilities. Precaution should be taken against mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue fever. Prophylactic medicines and repellents are important.

The Pakistani Rupee (PKR) is the official currency.

Pakistan uses Type C and Type D plugs, with a standard voltage of 230V with a frequency of 50Hz.

Transportation options

Public transport includes buses, minibuses, and rickshaws, though they can be crowded. For long-distance travel, trains and domestic flights are available, with Pakistan Railways connecting major cities. Ride-hailing services are available and they offer convenient transportation in urban areas.

Language

Urdu is the national language, but many locals also speak regional languages like Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, and Balochi. English is commonly spoken in urban areas, particularly among the younger population and professionals.

Local etiquette

Pakistanis are warm and hospitable, but understanding cultural norms is essential. Pakistanis are neutral communicators, you should be mindful of this when dealing with them. Remove shoes before entering mosques and some homes. Always use your right hand for eating and giving/receiving items, as the left is considered impolite.

  • Spring (March to May): It is characterised by Pleasant temperatures and blooming flowers, making it a great time for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

  • Summer (June to August): There is scorching heat but a good time to explore the cooler northern regions.

  • Autumn (September to November): The temperature is cooler with crispy air, making it ideal for trekking and exploring valleys.

  • Winter (December to February): The terrain gets covered in snow, creating perfect conditions for winter sports like skiing in Malam Jabba.

Travel cost

Pakistan is a budget-friendly destination. Affordable guesthouses and street food make it ideal for travellers on a budget, while luxury hotels and high-end dining are available for those seeking a more upscale experience. Domestic flights and transport options are reasonably priced. The average budget for Pakistani travel will be around $150.

Entry requirements

Visitors to Pakistan must have a valid visa before entry, except if they are from any of the visa-exempt countries.
Nationals of Israel are not allowed entry into Pakistan.
