Mexico is located in the southern part of North America, bordered by the United States to the north, Belize and Guatemala to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Gulf of Mexico to the east. The capital, Mexico City, is a sprawling metropolis known for its cultural landmarks and dynamic atmosphere.

With a population exceeding 126 million, Mexico is the 10th most populous country in the world. Mexico operates in multiple time zones, with Central Standard Time (GMT-6) being the most common.

Wine and cuisine

Mexican cuisine is famous for its bold flavours and unique ingredients. Staples include Brito, Carne Asada, Tacos,  Enchiladas and Arrachera. Fresh seafood and corn-based meals are highlights along coastal regions, with dishes like ceviche and grilled fish taking centre stage.

Mexico's wine industry is thriving, particularly in Valle de Guadalupe, known for its excellent red and white wines. Traditional drinks include tequila, from blue agave, and smoky mezcal. Non-alcoholic favourites are agua fresca, made from fruits, and sweet rice-based horchata.

Outdoor activities

Water sports among other activities are enjoyable in Mexico, all thanks to the warm climate and spectacular coastline. You can go out to watch amazing sports like football, baseball, and bullfighting. Mexico has several ecological and archaeological sites, so including them in your list of trips is not a bad idea. Mexico has about 35 world heritage sites that can provide you with a load of knowledge if you are looking to explore the pre-Columbian civilisation.

Nature

The highlight of most tourist visits is an exploration of Mexico’s natural wonders. Copper Canyon, Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and Sea of Cortez are some of the top sites visited by travellers.

Festivals and events

Mexico has vibrant festivals, with Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) being one of the most notable. Other important celebrations include Guelaguetza in Oaxaca, Independence Day on September 16, the Cervantino International Festival in Guanajuato, and Holy Week processions.

Health precautions

Travellers should ensure vaccinations for hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus are up to date. Some parts of Mexico are known for traveller’s diarrhoea, as a result, bottled water is highly recommended. Travellers are advised to make sure that meats are cooked thoroughly before consuming. Healthcare in major cities is of high quality, but rural areas may have limited facilities. Travel insurance is strongly advised.

Currency

The official currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN).

Electricity and plug types

Mexico uses plug types A and B, with a standard voltage of 127V and a frequency of 60Hz. 

Transportation options

Mexico has a good transportation system. You can take domestic flights to reach major cities. Long-distance buses offer affordable and comfortable travel options. In cities like Mexico City, you can use metro systems, taxis, or ride-sharing apps. Car rentals are great for exploring rural areas but might not be needed in city centres. In coastal areas, ferries are available for transfers to islands.

Language

Spanish is the official language, though indigenous languages like Nahuatl and Maya are still spoken in many regions. English is widely understood in tourist areas and major cities.

Local etiquette

Mexicans are known for their warmth and politeness. When visiting churches or religious sites, dress modestly, and avoid loud or disruptive behaviour. If at all you want to speak Spanish, be careful with your verb use. Make sure to show respect for the laws and customs of the country.

Seasons

  • Rainy Season (May to October): It is extremely wet during this period but the perks are clear days and a warm atmosphere.

  • Dry Season (November to April): Northern Mexico is usually snowy and chilled. In other parts of the country, the temperature is calm, with no rain or heat, making it an ideal time for tourists 

Travel cost

Budget travellers can expect to spend $30–50 daily on affordable accommodations, local meals, and public transport. Mid-range travellers may spend $100–200 daily for boutique hotels, guided tours, and upgraded dining options. Luxury travellers can indulge in high-end resorts, fine dining, and private excursions, with daily costs exceeding $300.

Entry requirements

All Visitors coming into Mexico are required to have a Multiple Immigration Form which costs $40. All foreign nationals are required to obtain a visa except if from any of the visa exempt and Electronic Travel Authorisation country
