General information
Find some interesting information to help you decide
Namibia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world, giving it an open and untamed character. It is bordered by Botswana, Angola, Zambia and the Atlantic Ocean and is renowned for its environmental conservation, with a significant portion of the land designated as protected areas. With a population of about 3 million people, Namibia runs a republican government and operates on the Africa/Windhoek (UTC+02:00) timezone. Namibia is popular as one of the highest producers of the world’s finest diamonds.
Wine and cuisine
Namibian cuisine is meat-based, but you are sure to find seafood in coastal areas. A must-try is kapana, grilled meat sold at street markets, and Matangara, beef tripes in a tangy sauce. Locally brewed beer, such as Oshikundu, or wines imported from neighbouring South Africa can be paired with your meal.
Outdoor activities
Namibia is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Thrill-seekers can sandboard or quad-bike down the towering dunes of Sossusvlei, while stargazers will be mesmerised by the night skies in the Namib Desert, one of the darkest in the world. Safari lovers can explore Etosha National Park, home to lions, elephants, and rare black rhinos. Other popular activities include hot air ballooning over the desert and hiking through Fish River Canyon, Africa’s largest canyon.
Nature
Namibia’s natural beauty is as diverse as it is breathtaking. The Namib Desert, considered the world’s oldest, features surreal landscapes of orange dunes and salt pans. Etosha National Park provides incredible opportunities to witness wildlife in its natural habitat, and the lush Caprivi Strip contrasts starkly with the rest of the arid country. The Fish River Canyon, is Africa’s largest canyon, and it is a must-see, especially for hikers.
Festivals and events
Namibia celebrates its culture and traditions through vibrant festivals. The Windhoek Oktoberfest reflects its German heritage, featuring traditional beer, music, and food. Independence Day on March 21 is a time of national pride and festivities. Other notable events include the Kuomboka Festival, showcasing the customs of the Zambezi Region, and the annual Namibian Tourism Expo in Windhoek.
Health precautions
Vaccinations for hepatitis A and B, yellow fever, MMR, typhoid, and rabies are recommended. Malaria prophylaxis is essential when visiting the northern regions. Tap water in urban areas is generally safe to drink, but bottled water is advisable in rural areas. Protect yourself from the sun and heat with sunscreen, hats, and hydration. The leading cause of death in the country is HIV, so take all necessary precautions.
Currency
The Namibian Dollar (NAD) is the official currency, pegged to the South African Rand (ZAR). Credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, but cash is preferred in remote locations.
Electricity and plug types
Namibia uses Type D and M plugs, with a voltage of 220-240V. Bring a travel adapter to ensure compatibility.
Transportation options
Namibia is best explored by car, and self-driving safaris are a popular choice. While public transport is limited, taxis, motorcycles, trains and minibus services operate in major towns. Domestic flights are available for quick transport within the country, and guided tours offer a convenient way to explore the safaris.
Language
English is the official language, but Afrikaans, Oshiwambo, and other indigenous languages are widely spoken. Older Namibians and those of German descent also speak German, making Namibia one of the few countries outside Europe where German is spoken.
Local etiquette
Namibians are friendly and welcoming. Greetings are always accompanied by questions about well-being. The dress culture is a bit relaxed, as you will find locals strolling in shorts and shirts, but modesty is a highlight of the dress.
Seasons
Summer (November to April): Hot and wet, with occasional thunderstorms. The rainfall is usually short and heavy. `
Winter (May to October): The weather is cool and dry. It is considered the best for wildlife spotting as animals gather around waterholes. Nights can be cold, especially in the desert.
Travel cost
Namibia caters to a range of budgets. Accommodation options vary from budget-friendly camping sites to luxurious lodges. Car rentals can be costly but are essential for exploring the country’s vast landscapes. Meals are reasonably priced, especially local fare, but activities like safaris and ballooning can add to expenses.
Entry requirements
All visitors must have an original passport with at least 6 months of validity and a valid visa, except if they are coming from any of the visa-exempt or visa-on-arrival country.
Recommendations
Visit any of the diamond shops around to get finely cut diamonds at a cheaper price. You should be careful of anyone trying to sell you uncut diamonds, as their possession is illegal.
The desert climate means hot days and cold nights, so versatile clothing is a must.
