Wine and cuisine

Chinese cuisine is known worldwide for its rich flavors and variety.  Each region of China offers unique culinary specialties shaped by local ingredients, climate, and customs. From spicy, meaty dishes and slowly simmered seafood stews to stir-fried vegetables. Southern China is popular for rice dishes, while based foods like noodles dominate the north. China has a growing wine industry, particularly in regions such as Ningxia and Shandong, which produce high-quality reds and whites. Locally distilled spirits like baijiu, a strong liquor, are also a key part of traditional celebrations.

Outdoor activities

China is full of numerous opportunities for outdoor exploration. As a country with the third highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, China provides tourists with a lot to see and do. The traditional Chinese sports and board games are some of the highlights that should not be missed by any tourist.

Nature

China is known for its stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Key features include the Yangtze River, the Tibetan Plateau with Mount Everest, and unique wildlife such as giant pandas and snow leopards. National parks like Jiuzhaigou and Huangshan showcase beautiful lakes and waterfalls, while coastal areas like Hainan Island provide tropical beaches and a tranquil atmosphere.

Festivals and events

China’s calendar is filled with vibrant festivals that reflect its rich traditions. The Chinese New Year, or Spring Festival, is the most important celebration, marked by family gatherings, dragon dances, and fireworks. The Mid-Autumn Festival is another highlight, centered around mooncakes and lantern displays.

The Dragon Boat Festival features thrilling boat races and traditional foods. These events provide visitors with an immersive experience of Chinese culture.

Health precautions

Travelers to China should ensure they are vaccinated against seasonal flu, COVID-19, MMR hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and tetanus. Additional vaccinations, such as rabies and Japanese encephalitis, are recommended if you are at higher risk of contracting them.

Air quality in some areas can be poor, so it is advisable to carry a mask. Tap water is not potable, so bottled or boiled water is used for drinking. It is recommended that you consult a travel clinic before departure for updated health advice.

Currency

The official currency of China is renminbi (RMB). The base unit is the yuan (CNY).

Electricity and plug types

China uses plug types A, C, and I, with a standard voltage of 220V and a frequency of 50Hz.

Transportation options

China’s transportation network is extensive and highly efficient. Domestic flights and high-speed trains are ideal for long-distance travel, while buses, taxis, and metro systems provide convenient options for getting around cities. Thanks to the well-developed road infrastructure, vehicle rentals are uncommon. However, dockless bicycles are readily available for rent, catering to a significant number of commuters and promoting eco-friendly travel within urban areas.

Language

The official language is Mandarin, also called Putonghua, and is spoken by most of the population. There are also regional dialects like Wu, Cantonese, and Min, which are spoken by a large number of people.

Local etiquette

An enjoyable stay in China is partly edged on obedience to the law and your politeness. Respect is highly valued in China, especially towards adult citizens. It is common to always go with a gift when going on a visit to a local’s house. Avoid discussions relating to politics as much as you can.
