The State of Qatar occupies the Qatar Peninsula, part of the Arabian Peninsula. The State of Qatar is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the south and surrounded by the Persian Gulf.  It gained independence in 1971 and has become a significant global player, particularly due to its substantial natural gas reserves and the influence of its media network, Al Jazeera and its airline, Qatar Airways. With a population of 2.6 million, the country is growing to be an international hub, as just 10% of that population is Qatari. The capital has established itself as one of the world’s foremost financial and trading centres.   The country operates an absolute monarchy and observes Arabia Standard Time (AST), GMT+3.

Wine and cuisine

Arab influences dominate the food scene in Qatar, although you can find Westen and other Asians in restaurants around. Local Qatari food contains Machboos, kebabs, hummus and bread. While alcohol is available within licensed hotels and restaurants, its availability is regulated. Traditional Qatari beverages include Arabic coffee and karak (a spiced tea).

Outdoor activities

Despite its desert environment, Qatar provides opportunities for outdoor pursuits. With the country surrounded by water, water sports are sure to be on the list of outdoor activities you can enjoy. Dune bashing in the desert area, kite surfing and shipwreck diving are also enjoyable activities although jet skiing is much more popular among the locals.

Nature

Qatar's landscape is predominantly desert, but it also encompasses notable coastal areas and wildlife. Khor Al Adaid, also known as the Inland Sea, is a recognised natural reserve, notable for its unique desert and marine ecosystems. The country has natural preserves like Al Reem Biosphere Preserve which provides a habitat for various wildlife, including the Arabian oryx, gazelles, and dugongs.

Festivals and events

Qatar hosts a range of cultural and sporting events throughout the year. The Doha International Book Fair attracts literature enthusiasts, every December. The Qatar International Food Festival showcases the country's diverse culinary offerings. The Formula 1 Grand Prix is an event for sports and car enthusiasts.

Arabic is the official language of Qatar. English is widely used and understood, particularly in business, commerce, and tourism.

Local etiquette

The Etiquette in Qatar is mostly similar to that of other Arabian countries.  Conservative dress is recommended, particularly for women as exposing body parts would draw unnecessary attention. Drinking and smoking in public is illegal. It is considered improper to eat with the left hand or hand gifts with it.

Ramadan is a sacred month and eating in public for non-muslims is illegal.
