Liberia is bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, and the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital, Monrovia, is the largest city and serves as the country's political and cultural hub. Liberia has strong historical ties with the United States of America, as the close resemblance in the national flags attests. The country is popular for being Africa’s first republic and haven for freed slaves.
The population is approximately 5 million. The country operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
Wine and cuisine
Liberian cuisine is hearty and flavourful, relying heavily on rice, cassava, and plantains. Popular dishes include jollof rice, and fufu, a doughy dish made from fermented cassava served with spicy soups like pepper soup or palm butter stew. Grilled fish and chicken are also common, accompanied by hot pepper sauces.
While Liberia does not produce wine, locally brewed palm wine and ginger beer are popular beverages. Imported wines, beers, and spirits are available in urban areas.
Outdoor activities
Liberia features diverse natural landscapes ideal for outdoor exploration. Sapo National Park, one of West Africa's last intact rainforests, is home to unique wildlife and offers guided treks. Robertsport is famous for its golden beaches and surfing opportunities, while Providence Island near Monrovia is historically significant as the landing site of freed slaves, combining history with scenic beauty. The dry season in Liberia is a good time to attend concert parties and experience the thriving music scene in the country.
Nature
Liberia has beautiful rainforests, hills, and a long coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. The country is home to many unique species, including the western chimpanzee, Diana monkey, and various tropical birds. Conservation efforts in areas like Sapo National Park work to protect Liberia’s special ecosystems.
Festivals and events

Independence Day on July 26 features parades, music, and communal feasts, while the National Cultural Festival showcases traditional dances and crafts. Religious holidays like Christmas and Ramadan unite communities, and local harvest festivals reflect rural traditions and agriculture.
Health precautions
Travellers to Liberia should ensure vaccinations for yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and meningitis are up to date. Malaria is a significant risk, so preventive medication and mosquito repellent are essential
Drink only bottled or boiled water, and avoid ice in drinks. Healthcare facilities are limited outside Monrovia, so comprehensive travel insurance with coverage for medical evacuation is highly recommended.
Currency
The official currency is the Liberian Dollar (LRD), though US dollars are widely accepted and used interchangeably.
Electricity and plug types
Liberia uses plug types A, B, and F. The standard voltage is 120/220V, and the frequency is 60Hz.
Transportation options
Transportation in Liberia includes taxis, shared minibuses, and motorbikes, which are common in urban areas. However, it is recommended to hire a 4x4 vehicle with a driver to explore rural areas, as road conditions can be challenging, particularly during the rainy season. Boats are also available but limited to touristy areas like Robertsport.
Language
English is the official language, but indigenous languages such as Kpelle, Bassa, and Vai are widely spoken.
Local etiquette
Liberians are known for their friendliness and respect for social customs. Greetings are an important part of their culture, and avoiding people can be considered rude. Accept requests for help; simply saying ‘Maybe later’ or ‘I will keep it in mind’ will prevent you from being perceived as arrogant.
