Rwanda is bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its capital, Kigali, is celebrated for its cleanliness, safety, and growing reputation as a modern African city.
The population is approximately 13 million. The official languages are Kinyarwanda, English, French, and Swahili, with Kinyarwanda being the most widely spoken. Rwanda operates on Central Africa Time (GMT+2).
Wine and cuisine
Rwandan cuisine reflects the country’s agricultural heritage, with staples like bananas, beans, maize, and cassava forming the base of many meals. You will find brochettes, fried or grilled Ibitoke as a commonly enjoyed meal.
While Rwanda does not produce wine locally, imported varieties are available in urban areas. The local beer scene is vibrant, with brands like Primus and Mützig widely enjoyed. For a non-alcoholic option, try Urwagwa, a traditional fermented milk drink.
Outdoor activities
Rwanda is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Volcanoes National Park offers the unforgettable experience of trekking to see endangered mountain gorillas, along with golden monkeys and scenic trails. Akagera National Park is perfect for game drives, where visitors can spot elephants, lions, and zebras. For a more tranquil adventure, Lake Kivu provides kayaking and boat trips, while Nyungwe Forest is ideal for chimpanzee trekking and thrilling canopy walks.

Health precautions
Travellers to Rwanda should ensure vaccinations for yellow fever, hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus are up to date. There is the Marburg virus, which is quite similar to Ebola, so it is best to avoid physical contact and touch.
Tap water is not safe for drinking; stick to bottled or boiled water. Healthcare facilities are reliable in Kigali but limited in rural areas, so comprehensive travel insurance, including coverage for medical evacuation, is strongly advised.
Currency
The official currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF).
Electricity and plug types
Rwanda uses plug types C and J, with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz.
Transportation options
Rwanda has a well-maintained transportation network. Public buses connect major towns and cities, while minibuses and moto-taxis are common for local travel. For exploring national parks and rural areas, hiring a private vehicle with a guide is recommended. There is taxi-velo, bicycle taxis which are popular among locals for short-distance travel, but you cannot seem to find them in urban areas.
Language
Kinyarwanda is the primary language spoken by nearly all Rwandans. English and French are also official languages and are commonly used in education, business, and tourism.
Local etiquette
Just like in many African countries, greetings are very important. The elders should be accorded respect in every way, The society is a bit conservative, so conservative dressing is advised. Rwandans do not eat or drink outside. Another thing is the utmost sense of privacy.
Seasons
Dry Season (June to September, December to February): Ideal for trekking and wildlife viewing, with clear skies and minimal rainfall.
Rainy Season (March to May, October to November): There is a heavy downpour that alternates with sunny days during this season.
Travel cost
Rwanda caters to a range of budgets. Budget travellers can expect to spend $50–100 daily, covering guesthouses, local meals, and public transport. Mid-range travellers may budget $150–300 daily for comfortable lodges, guided tours, and dining at better restaurants. Luxury travellers seeking high-end lodges and exclusive experiences can expect costs exceeding $500 daily.
Entry requirements
Visitors to Rwanda must have a valid visa, except, if they are coming from any of the visa-exempt countries.
All visitors must have a passport with at least 6 months of validity.

Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to understand Rwanda’s history and ongoing reconciliation efforts.
Book gorilla trekking permits well in advance, as they are limited and highly sought after.
Pack Appropriately: Bring sturdy footwear, light rain gear, and layers for varying weather conditions, especially during outdoor activities.
