The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is an Arab nation located in Western Asia, bordered by Syria to the north, Iraq to the northeast, Saudi Arabia to the east and south, and Israel and the West Bank to the west. 1  It is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system. Amman is the capital and largest city. Jordan observes Eastern European Time (EET), GMT+2, and Eastern European Summer Time (EEST), GMT+3 during the summer months.

Wine and cuisine

Jordanian cuisine is characterised by the use of fresh ingredients, aromatic spices, and generous hospitality. Mansaf, considered the national dish, is a flavourful lamb dish cooked in fermented dried yoghurt and served with rice or bulgur. Other popular dishes include falafel, hummus, shawarma, and Zarb. Mint tea and Arabic coffee are traditional beverages enjoyed throughout the country. While alcohol is available in tourist areas and some restaurants, it is not widely consumed in public due to cultural and religious considerations.

Outdoor activities

Jordan's diverse landscape provides ample opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Exploring the ancient city of Petra, one of the seven wonders of the world, is a must-do experience. Hiking and rock climbing are popular in places like Dana Nature Reserve, Wadi Rum, Wadi Mujib, and Wadi Bin Hammad. Floating in the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, is a unique and therapeutic experience. Diving and snorkelling are popular in the Red Sea resort of Aqaba.

Nature

Jordan's environment is diverse, featuring desert landscapes, fertile valleys, and canyons. Key highlights include Wadi Rum, known for its sandstone mountains and red sand dunes; the Dead Sea, recognized for its mineral content and therapeutic benefits; and the Dana Biosphere Reserve, which protects a range of plant and animal species.

Festivals and events

Jordan hosts a variety of cultural and religious festivals each year. Notable among them are Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, which are celebrated with family gatherings and festive meals. The Jerash Festival showcases traditional music, dance, and crafts in the ancient city of Jerash. Independence Day on May 25 commemorates Jordan's freedom from British rule.

Health precautions

Travellers to Jordan should ensure their routine vaccinations are up to date. Healthcare in Jordan is advanced. You should be careful of foods you eat, make sure that they are prepared under good hygienic conditions.

Currency

The Jordanian official currency is the Jordanian dinar (JOD).

Jordan uses Type C, D, F, G, and J electrical plugs and operates on a 230V voltage supply at 50Hz.

Transportation options

Service taxis, buses, planes, and trains are ways you can move around in Jordan. Most tourists in Jordan also opt for transport provided by tour operators.

Language

The official language of Jordan is Arabic. English is widely spoken, particularly in tourist areas and business settings.

Local etiquette

Jordanians are known for their warm hospitality and welcoming nature. The country is liberal and very hospitable to tourists. Conservative dress is recommended. Respect for the royal family is an important aspect of Jordanian culture, and as much as possible, avoid discussing Israel.

Seasons

  • Spring (March to May): Weather can be a bit unstable at first till April when there is a balance in temperature and the warmth comes in, in preparation for summer 

  • Summer (June to August): Summer is hot and dry, with the highest temperature on the coast of the Dead Sea. August is usually the hottest month of the season

  • Autumn (September to November): The summer heats are gradually gone, and the cooling effects are setting in

  • Winter (December to February): Temperatures are cool except on the coast of the Dead Sea and Aqaba, where the warmth is concentrated. There can be snowy days, too, when going out would not be an option to be considered

Jordan offers a range of accommodation and dining options to suit various budgets. Budget-friendly options include hostels and guesthouses, as well as mid-range and luxury hotels.
