Officially known as the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Laos is bordered by Thailand, Vietnam, China, Myanmar, and Cambodia. Vientiane is its capital. Buddhism is deeply embedded in Lao culture and it is reflected in the countless saffron-robed monks and serene stupas scattered throughout the country. It has a population of about 7.5 million that is spread across rural landscapes and a few urban centres, Laos operates on Indochina Time (GMT+7), with no daylight saving adjustments.
Wine and cuisine
Laos’ cuisine is earthy, flavourful, and deeply tied to its cultural roots. A popular dish is sticky rice, eaten by hand and paired with side dishes like jeow mak len. Grilled fish, marinated meats, and vegetable stews feature prominently on menus. While wine is not locally produced, lao-lao, a strong rice spirit, is widely produced and enjoyed. Beer Lao, the national beer, is a favourite among locals and visitors alike and pairs perfectly with the country’s spicy dishes.
Outdoor activities
For outdoor enthusiasts, Laos is an unspoiled haven. Major tourist activities include hiking, trekking, swimming, and guided road trips. A Laotian experience is often enjoyed in the herbal sauna, which is available in traditional temples.
Nature
Nature dominates the Laotian landscape. The Mekong River and The Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park in northern Laos which is a haven for wildlife, including clouded leopards and sun bears are major natural highlights. Laos is also home to waterfalls and dense forests.
Festivals and events
Laos’ festivals are vibrant expressions of its culture and spirituality. The Pi Mai Lao celebrated in April is a joyous affair with water fights, parades, and rituals to wash away the past year’s misfortunes. That Luang Festival, held in Vientiane in November, is a religious celebration where devotees gather to honour the sacred stupa of That Luang. The Hmong New Year, observed in December, features colourful costumes, music, and traditional games. Visitors during these festivals gain a deeper understanding of Laos’ rich traditions and community spirit.
Health precautions
Travellers to Laos should ensure they are up to date on vaccinations for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, tetanus and other standard travel vaccines. Mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever and malaria are present, particularly in the rainy season, so carrying mosquito repellent and wearing protective clothing is essential. Travel insurance that includes cover for medical evacuation is strongly recommended.
Currency
The official currency of Laos is the Lao kip (LAK). US dollars and Thai baht are also accepted in tourist areas.
Electricity and plug types
Laos uses plug types A, B, C, and E, with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Because power outages can occur in rural areas, it is recommended that you carry a portable power bank.
Transportation options
Travel in Laos is an adventure in itself. Minivans, converted trucks, local buses and converted trucks are the main modes of transport, though roads can be rough and journeys long. Speed boats along the Mekong River offer a scenic way to travel between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang. Bicycles are an eco-friendly way to explore cities. Domestic flights are available for longer distances but can be expensive compared to other options.
Language
Lao is the official language, and most people in rural areas primarily speak it. French is often used in government.
Local etiquette
Laotians are known for their politeness and quiet demeanour, and visitors are encouraged to follow suit. Avoid loud or confrontational behaviour, as it is considered disrespectful. When visiting temples, dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and always remove your shoes before entering. In social settings, use your right hand to pass items or shake hands, as it is seen as the clean hand.
Seasons
Cool Season (November to February): There is less rainfall and the air is dry. This is the best time to visit, considering the mild temperatures and clear skies. Temperatures are low compared to other seasons
Hot Season (March to May): High temperature and humidity characterise the season, making city exploration a challenge. Temperatures can soar as high as 40°C
Rainy Season (May to October): Frequent rains bring lush greenery, and the countryside looks particularly stunning, though travel can be slower due to muddy roads.
Travel cost
Laos is a budget-friendly destination. Backpackers can comfortably spend $20–30 daily on simple guesthouses, local food, and public transport. Mid-range travellers may budget $50–100 for boutique stays, guided tours, and private transport. Luxury travellers, while limited in options, can expect to spend upwards of $200 daily on high-end accommodations and personalised experiences.
