Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia border Malawi. Its capital, Lilongwe, is the political and administrative centre, while Blantyre is the country’s commercial hub.
Malawi has an estimated population of 20 million. It operates on Central African Time (GMT+2), and no daylight saving time is observed.
Wine and cuisine
Malawian cuisine is hearty and based on local produce. Maize is a staple with derivatives like
Nsima, is a maize-based porridge served with relish, meat, or vegetables. Other popular dishes include chamboi, and makhani, a dish made with pumpkin leaves and groundnuts.
While Malawi does not produce wine locally, imported wines, beers, and locally brewed drinks such as the Kuche Kuche, are widely enjoyed. Fresh tropical juices, particularly those made from mangoes, pineapples, and bananas, are also a highlight.
Outdoor activities
Malawi offers a variety of outdoor adventures. Lake Malawi is remarkable for watersports and boat activities. There is the opportunity for wildlife safaris and bird-watching activities in any of the eight land-based wildlife reserves and national parks.

Nature
Malawi has one of the most diverse landscapes in Africa ranging from, mountains, forests, plateaux, and highlands to river valleys. Elephants, hippos, leopards, crocs, and lions are big players in the wildlife scene. They can be found in protected areas where you get to see different species of birds.
Festivals and events
Malawi’s festivals highlight its cultural and artistic heritage. The Lake of Stars Festival held annually along the shores of Lake Malawi, showcases local and international music, dance, and art. The Mulanje Mountain Porters Race, a unique event, challenges participants to race up and down Mount Mulanje. The Blantyre Arts Festival celebrates Malawian creativity with performances, exhibitions, and workshops. Traditional ceremonies, such as the Umhlangano wa Maseko Ngoni, provide insights into the rituals and history of local communities.
Health precautions
Travellers to Malawi should ensure vaccinations for hepatitis A, rabies, typhoid, yellow fever (if coming from a yellow fever zone), and tetanus are up to date. Malaria prevention is essential, as the disease is prevalent throughout the country, so carry mosquito repellent and take prophylactics.
Be careful of bilharzia especially if you are around the Cape Maclear district. Healthcare facilities are limited outside major towns, so comprehensive travel insurance, including coverage for medical evacuation, is strongly advised.
Currency
The official currency is the Malawian Kwacha (MWK).
Electricity and plug types
Malawi uses plug type G (as in the UK), with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Travellers from countries with different plug types should bring an adapter.
Transportation options
Public transportation in Malawi includes minibuses and shared taxis, which are affordable but often crowded. Boats are enjoyable means of travel especially if travelling Monday Bay and Chilumba
Language
English and Chichewa are the main languages but there are dozens of other local languages too.. Chichewa is spoken by the majority, and learning basic phrases, such as ‘Moni’, Hello, can enhance interactions with locals and demonstrate respect for their culture.
Local etiquette
To Malawians not being courteous is a show of disrespect. Various ways this courtesy is shown are a friendly handshake, respectful language and soft speaking. Greetings are an important part of daily interactions as the idea of ‘going straight to the point’ is not welcomed.
Modest clothing is recommended, for both males and females. It is provocative when women wear shorts or mini skirts while men in shorts are perceived as childish.
Seasons
Dry Season (May to October): It is usually cool and cold during this period, though it is expected to be usually warm and sunny during the day. The best time for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities, with cooler temperatures and minimal rainfall.
Wet Season (November to April): The season is always rainy and the temperature is hot. There is high humidity and high cases of flooding
Travel cost
Malawi is one of the least expensive countries to travel to, and it caters to a range of budgets. Budget travellers can expect to spend about $50 daily, covering basic accommodations, local meals, and public transport. Mid-range travellers may budget $100–200 daily for comfortable lodges, guided tours, and better dining options. Luxury travellers seeking private lodges and personalised experiences should expect costs exceeding $300 daily.
Entry requirements
Visitors to Malawi are required to obtain an electronic visa before entry, except if from any of the visa-exempt or visa-on-arrival countries.
