Tanzania is bordered by Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, and the Indian Ocean. It is the largest country in East Africa. Its largest city and economic hub is Dar es Salaam, while the capital, Dodoma, serves as the administrative centre.

The population is approximately 65 million. Tanzania operates on East African Time (GMT+3) and does not observe daylight saving time.

Wine and cuisine

Tanzanian cuisine is a blend of African, Indian, and Arab influences, showcasing a variety of flavours and ingredients. Popular dishes include ugali, mtori, and mandazi 

Tanzania produces wine in the Dodoma region, known for its dry red and white varieties. Locally brewed banana beer, fruit juices and coconut water are widely enjoyed, alongside the popular Tanzanian beer brands Safari Lager and Kilimanjaro Beer.

Outdoor activities

Tanzania is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Safari tours in the Serengeti National Park offer a chance to witness the Great Migration, while the Ngorongoro Crater provides an unparalleled wildlife viewing experience.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak, is a bucket-list destination for trekkers, with trails catering to various skill levels. The turquoise waters of Zanzibar are ideal for snorkelling, diving, and kite surfing, while the Selous Game Reserve offers secluded safaris and river cruises.

Nature

Tanzania’s landscapes are diverse, ranging from the savannahs of the Serengeti to the volcanic slopes of Mount Meru. The Rufiji River Delta and Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa, add to its geographical richness.

The country is home to a staggering array of wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo), giraffes, zebras, and numerous bird species. Marine life is equally impressive, with coral reefs, dolphins, and whale sharks off the Zanzibar archipelago.

Festivals and events

Tanzania’s festivals reflect its cultural diversity and vibrant traditions. The Sauti za Busara music festival in Zanzibar showcases the best of East African music. The Serengeti Cultural Festival, held annually, celebrates traditional dances, crafts, and food.

Religious celebrations like Eid al-Fitr and Christmas are widely observed, while local events such as the Mwaka Kogwa, a traditional Shirazi festival in Zanzibar, provide unique cultural insights. Independence Day, December 9, is marked with parades and festivities across the country.

Health precautions

Travellers to Tanzania should ensure their vaccinations for yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and tetanus are up to date. Malaria is prevalent, so it is essential to use insect repellent, take prophylactics, and sleep under mosquito nets.

Drink only bottled or boiled water, as tap water is not safe. Comprehensive travel insurance, including coverage for medical evacuation, is strongly recommended.

Currency

The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). 

Electricity and plug types

Tanzania uses plug types D and G, with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Travellers from countries with different plug types should bring an adapter.

Transportation options

Tanzania’s transportation options include buses, minibuses, and taxis for urban and intercity travel. Domestic flights are available if your budget caters for it.

Car rentals are available but familiarity with the road situation is needed.

Language

Swahili and English are the official languages. 

Local etiquette

Tanzanians are known for their politeness and warmth. Greetings are an important part of daily interactions, and taking the time to exchange pleasantries is appreciated. Consider learning a few Swahili, it will help your communication when exchanging pleasantries 

Modest clothing is recommended, especially in rural areas and in Zanzibar, which has a predominantly Muslim population. Always ask permission before taking photographs of people or religious sites. 

Seasons

  • Dry Season (June to October): The best time for wildlife viewing, with clear skies and minimal rainfall. Temperature can be as high as 35℃ during the day. The coolest months of the year fall within this period, usually between June and August.

  • Short Wet Season (October to December): A brief rainy period, but still good for travel and less crowded.

  • Long Wet Season (March to May): Heavy rains make travel challenging, but landscapes are lush, and birdwatching is excellent.

Travel cost

Tanzania caters to various budgets. Budget travellers can expect to spend $50–100 daily, covering guesthouses, local meals, and public transport. Mid-range travellers may budget $150–300 daily for comfortable lodges, guided tours, and domestic flights. Luxury travellers should expect costs exceeding $500 daily, particularly for exclusive safaris and upscale accommodations.

Entry requirements

Visitors to Tanzania must obtain a visa before arrival, except if they are from any of the visa-exempted countries.

  • Bring sturdy footwear, sun protection, and insect repellent for outdoor activities.
