The Republic of Moldova is bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. Its capital, Chișinău, is the country’s largest city and the centre of cultural, economic, and political life. Moldova has a population of approximately 2.6 million people.

Moldova operates on Eastern European Time (GMT+2), with daylight saving time observed from late March to late October.

Wine and cuisine

Traditional Moldovan cuisine reflects a blend of Romanian, Ukrainian, and Russian influences. Popular dishes include mămăligă, a cornmeal dish often served with cheese, sour cream, or meat, and sarmale, cabbage rolls stuffed with rice and meat., while placinte, savoury pies filled with cheese, cabbage, or potatoes, are widely enjoyed. 

Moldova is celebrated for its winemaking tradition, which dates back thousands of years. The country’s vineyards produce some of Europe’s finest wines, including reds like Fetească Neagră and whites like Fetească Albă. A visit to Cricova and Mileștii Mici, home to some of the largest wine cellars in the world, is a must for any traveller.

Moldova's scenic countryside offers ample opportunities for exploration, from hiking and cycling through gentle hills and vineyards to visiting Orheiul Vechi, an archaeological site with ancient monasteries and breathtaking views of the Răut River valley. The Codru Nature Reserve provides tranquil walking trails among diverse wildlife, while the Dniester River is ideal for kayaking and fishing. Rural villages like Butuceni further highlight the country’s pastoral charm, making Moldova a perfect destination for leisurely activities and retreats.

Moldova has rolling hills, fertile land, and winding rivers. Its countryside contains vineyards, forests, and charming villages. The Codru Forest is the oldest nature reserve and is home to rare animals like wild boars and deer. The Dniester River adds to the beauty of the landscape and supports farming. Moldova's natural scenery is perfect for relaxing and reflecting.

Festivals and events

Moldova celebrates its wine culture and traditions through various festivals. National Wine Day in October highlights the country’s famous wines with tastings and celebrations in Chișinău and beyond. Martisor, on March 1, marks spring's arrival. People exchange red-and-white thread tokens that symbolise renewal and good luck. Other events, like the Soroca Fortress Festival and Orthodox Christian celebrations, showcase Moldova’s cultural heritage.

Health precautions

Travellers to Moldova should ensure vaccinations for hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus are up to date. Tap water is not always safe to drink, so bottled or filtered water is recommended. While healthcare facilities in Chișinău are adequate, services in rural areas may be limited.                                                                                             

Comprehensive travel insurance, including coverage for medical evacuation, is strongly advised. 


Currency

The official currency is the Moldovan Leu (MDL). 

Electricity and plug types

Moldova uses plug types C and F, with a standard voltage of 230V and a frequency of 50Hz. Travellers should bring an appropriate adapter if their devices use different plug types.

Transportation options

Moldova is a small country and getting around is not much of a hassle. Buses and minibuses known as marshrutki are the primary means of travel between cities and towns. 

Language

Romanian is the official language of Moldova, though Russian is widely spoken, particularly in Transnistria and urban areas. Ukrainian and Gagauz are also spoken by minority communities. English is taught in schools but not widely spoken outside tourist areas.

Local etiquette

Visitors should expect warmth and kindness upon reception in Moldova. Moldovans hold women in high esteem, so if you are a woman expect to be treated with all the chivalry there is in the world. Do not talk about sensitive issues like politics especially if revolving Moldova’s tie to Europe or Russia.

  • Spring (March to May): At first the temperature is mild with cold nights, as days go by, the time becomes warmer and warmer

  • Summer (June to August): The warm and sunny weather makes it ideal for exploring vineyards and outdoor attractions. Expect heavy but short rais

  • Autumn (September to November): The season brings cooler temperatures and lively wine festivals.

  • Winter (December to February): Cold and snowy conditions are common, particularly in northern areas, offering a quieter experience.

Travel cost

Moldova is an affordable travel destination. Budget travellers can spend $30–50 per day, while mid-range travellers may budget $70–120 for boutique accommodations and upscale meals. Luxury options in Chișinău exceed $200 per day.

Visitors to Moldova are to obtain a visa, except if they are from any of the visa-exempt countries.
