Nepal is a relatively small country with approximately 30 million people. The government is a federal democratic republic. Nepal is a famed destination particularly for mountain climbers, as it is home to 8 of the highest peaks in the world. Nepal's culture is deeply rooted in Hinduism and Buddhism, with a rich tapestry of traditions and festivals. The country operates in Nepal (GMT+5:45).

The country's cuisine is influenced by its geographical location and diverse ethnic groups. Dal bhat takaari, lentil soup and rice is a national dish often served with vegetables and curries. Momo, dumplings and chow mein stir-fried noodles are popular snacks. While not traditionally known for wine production, Nepal has a small but growing wine industry. 

Nepal is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Trekking is the most popular activity, with numerous trails ranging from easy walks to challenging high-altitude treks. Climbing, mountaineering, and white-water rafting are also popular. Chitwan National Park offers opportunities for wildlife viewing and jungle safaris.

Nepal is known for its diverse geography, featuring majestic Himalayan peaks, green valleys, and expansive lowland plains. It is home to eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including the iconic Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga. Additionally, the country boasts significant natural reserves such as Chitwan National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is inhabited by Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinoceroses, and various bird species. On the other hand, Sagarmatha National Park showcases breathtaking glaciers and vegetation, further highlighting Nepal's rich natural beauty.

Nepal has a vibrant festival scene, with numerous religious and cultural celebrations throughout the year. Dashain, the longest and most important festival, celebrates the victory of good over evil. Tihar, the festival of lights, is a colourful and joyous occasion. Other notable festivals include Holi, the festival of colours, and Buddha Jayanti, celebrating the birth of Buddha.

Consult with a travel doctor regarding vaccinations for diseases like typhoid, hepatitis A, and tetanus. Altitude sickness is a risk for trekkers, so it's important to acclimatize gradually. Mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue fever can occur, so using insect repellent is recommended. Beware of hypothermia and improperly cooked food. It is advised to always carry sanitisers with you, so you can always wash your hands from time to time.

The Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the official currency. 

The standard voltage in Nepal is 230 volts, and the plug types are C, D, and M. It is recommended to bring a universal adapter.

Transportation within Nepal can be challenging due to the mountainous terrain. Domestic flights connect major cities, but they can be delayed due to weather conditions. Buses are the most common mode of transportation, but they can be crowded and uncomfortable. Tourist buses offer a more comfortable option for popular routes. Hiring a private car or jeep is also possible.

Nepali is the official language, although many other languages and dialects are spoken.

Nepalese people are known for their hospitality and respect for elders. It is customary to greet people with "Namaste" and a slight bow. The Hindu culture is big in Nepal and as a non-Hindu, you might not be permitted to do what most Hindu locals do. Respect for elders is an important part of the Nepali culture.

Traditionally, Nepal recognises six distinct seasons, known as Ritus, each lasting about two months:

• Basanta Ritu (Spring): This is from mid-March to mid-May. This period is characterised by blooming flowers and moderate temperatures.

• Grishma Ritu (Early Summer): This is from mid-May to mid-July. The temperatures rise, leading to hotter days as the country approaches the monsoon.

• Barsha Ritu (Monsoon/Rainy Season): This is from mid-July to mid-September. Marked by heavy rainfall, this season brings lush greenery but can also result in landslides and challenging travel conditions.

• Sharad Ritu (Early Autumn): This is from mid-September to mid-November. Post-monsoon, the weather becomes pleasant with clear skies, making it an ideal time for trekking and celebrating major festivals like Dashain and Tihar.

• Hemanta Ritu (Late Autumn): This is from mid-November to mid-January. Temperatures begin to drop, and the environment starts preparing for winter.

• Shishir Ritu (Winter): This is from mid-January to mid-March. The coldest period, especially in the higher altitudes, with occasional snowfall.

Nepal is generally an affordable destination, especially for budget travellers. Accommodation, food, and transportation costs are relatively low compared to other countries. Backpackers can expect to spend $25–50 daily, covering basic accommodations, local meals, and transport. Mid-range travellers may budget $75–150 daily for boutique stays, guided tours, and additional comforts. Luxury travellers can expect costs exceeding $200 daily, especially for high-end lodges and private treks.

All visitors to Nepal must obtain a visa, except if they are nationals of India or from any of the visa-on-arrival countries.

All visitors must hold an original passport valid for 6 months.

• If you are planning to trek, make sure you do it in the company of other trekkers or hire a local guide and porter. 

• As far as the Nepalese Rupee is concerned, you can only exchange inside Nepal. So make sure you convert all your currencies before you leave Nepal as Nepalese currency is not tenable in any part of the world.
