Burkina Faso is bordered by Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana, and Côte d’Ivoire. Its capital, Ouagadougou, often referred to as “Ouaga,” serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of the nation. Burkina Faso operates on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
Wine and cuisine
Burkinabé cuisine is simple but tasty. It mainly uses millet, sorghum, and maize. A common dish is tô, a thick porridge served with sauces made from vegetables, peanuts, or okra. Grilled meat, called brochettes, is also popular, along with fried plantains and fish dishes.
Burkina Faso does not produce wine, but local drinks like dolo, a sorghum beer, and bissap, a hibiscus flower drink, are common. In urban areas, you can find imported wines and spirits.
Outdoor activities
Burkina Faso’s outdoor attractions offer a mix of nature and culture. Visit the Sindou Peaks, a striking geological formation near Banfora, where you can hike and enjoy panoramic views. The lakes outside of Ouaga, on the road to Bobo-Dioulasso, are perfect spots for crocodile spotting.
For art and cultural exploration, places like Laongo showcase showcase sculptures by local and international artists.
Nature
The landscapes of Burkina Faso range from savannahs to semi-deserts. The Arly National Park, part of the W-Arly-Pendjari Complex, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a haven for wildlife, including lions, buffaloes, and hippos. Lake Tengrela, near Banfora, is a serene spot known for its population of hippos and opportunities for birdwatching.
Festivals and events
Burkina Faso is renowned for its vibrant festivals, reflecting its artistic and cultural identity. The FESPACO (Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou), held every two years, is Africa’s largest film festival, attracting artists and filmmakers from across the continent.
The Festival International des Masques et des Arts de Dédougou (FESTIMA) celebrates traditional masks featuring dance, storytelling, and rituals. Religious and cultural events, such as Ramadan, Eid, and harvest festivals, are widely observed in rural and urban areas.
Health precautions
Travelers to Burkina Faso should ensure vaccinations for yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and meningitis are up to date. Malaria prevention is essential, so carry mosquito repellent and take prophylactics. Dengue and Lassa fever, too, seem to pose a threat in the country.
Healthcare facilities are limited outside major cities, so a well-stocked first aid kit and comprehensive travel insurance, including medical evacuation, are strongly recommended. To avoid waterborne illnesses, drink only bottled or boiled water.
Currency
The official currency is the West African CFA Franc (XOF), which is used by several countries in the region.
Electricity and plug types
Burkina Faso uses plug types C and E, with a standard voltage of 220V and a frequency of 50Hz.
Transportation options
Public transport in Burkina Faso includes buses, minibuses, and shared taxis. Buses connect major towns, while shared taxis and motorbike taxis are common for short distances. Due to the challenging road conditions, it is recommended that you hire a private vehicle with a driver if you are entering remote areas.
Language
The official languages are Mooré, Bissa, Dyula and Fula. French was the official language till 2023.
Local etiquette
Burkinabé people are known for their politeness and respect for social norms. Greetings are an important part of daily interactions, often involving handshakes and inquiries about well-being.
Dress modestly, particularly in rural areas or when visiting religious sites.
Seasons
Dry Season (November to April): Characterised by clear skies and cooler evenings, this is the best time for travel and outdoor activities.
Rainy Season (May to October): This is the hottest and wettest season. It is characterized by downpours, and the Southwestern part receives the most of it.
