Saudi Arabia covers an area of 2.15 million square kilometres, making it the largest country in the Middle East. Its population is approximately 35 million, with Riyadh as the capital and largest city. The country is home to Islam’s holiest cities, Mecca and Medina. Saudi Arabia operates on Arabian Standard Time (GMT+3). The country is a monarchy, with Islam playing a central role in its governance and culture.

Saudi Arabian cuisine reflects its Bedouin heritage and regional diversity, emphasising rice, meat, dates, and spices. Popular dishes include kabsa, a spiced rice dish with lamb or chicken, mandi, chicken or mutton cooked with rice in a pot suspended above a fire. Dates and Arabic coffee are staples of hospitality. Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia, but visitors can enjoy a variety of traditional beverages such as qamar al-din, apricot drink and nabeez date-based drink.

Saudi Arabia’s vast landscapes offer a range of outdoor activities. The Empty Quarter, the world’s largest sand desert, provides opportunities for desert safaris, dune bashing, and camel treks.  The Red Sea coast is a paradise for divers and snorkellers, featuring coral reefs and vibrant marine life. Being the origin of camel racing, locals still indulge in traditional pastimes and you can join them.

Saudi Arabia’s geography includes deserts, mountains, oases, and coastlines. The Edge of the World, a striking escarpment near Riyadh, offers breathtaking views of the desert plains. The Farasan Islands in the Red Sea are home to mangroves, pristine beaches, and diverse wildlife, including rare gazelles. The Asir National Park in the southwest is a green oasis with cool weather perfect for birdwatching. The Kingdom’s unique geology is also evident in sites like the Harrat Khaybar Lava Fields, showcasing volcanic craters and black basalt landscapes.

Saudi Arabia hosts a variety of cultural and modern events. The Riyadh Season, running from October to March, features concerts, exhibitions, and entertainment from around the world. Winter at Tantora, held in AlUla, combines music, art, and cultural experiences amid historical ruins. The Jeddah Season celebrates the Red Sea coast with beach festivals, water sports, and culinary events. Traditional festivals like Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are marked by family gatherings, feasts, and prayers. Camel racing, a beloved local tradition, can be witnessed at various festivals and competitions.

Travellers should ensure they are up to date with vaccinations, including Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. A vaccination certificate for Yellow Fever is required if arriving from affected areas. Tap water is generally safe in cities but bottled water is recommended. The desert climate necessitates sun protection, including sunscreen, hats, and hydration. Comprehensive travel insurance is important.

The official currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR). 

Saudi Arabia uses a 230-volt power supply with a frequency of 60 Hz. The standard plug type is Type G.

Saudi Arabia boasts a modern transportation network.. Intercity travel is facilitated by high-speed trains, connecting the major cities. Domestic flights are common for covering long distances, with Saudia and Flynas being major airlines. Taxis and ride-hailing apps like Careem and Uber are widely available in cities. Renting a car is ideal for exploring remote areas, but international driving permits are required.

Arabic is the official language.

Saudi culture places great emphasis on respect and hospitality. Public displays of affection are discouraged, and alcohol and pork products are strictly prohibited. It is a crime for unrelated males and females to be seen together. The month of Ramadan is a holy month held in high regard, it is a punishable offence to be seen eating in public during fasting times.

• Winter (November to February): Mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C, ideal for outdoor activities.

• Spring (March to May): Warm days and cool evenings, with occasional rain in some regions.

• Summer (June to August): Extremely hot, with temperatures exceeding 40°C, particularly in the central and eastern regions.

• Autumn (September to October): Cooler than summer, with gradual relief from high temperatures.
  

Saudi Arabia offers a range of travel options for different budgets. Budget travellers can expect to spend $50–80 per day, covering affordable hotels, street food, and local transport. Mid-range travellers may spend $120–200 daily, including comfortable accommodations, dining at restaurants, and guided tours. Luxury travellers should budget $300 or more per day for high-end hotels, private tours, and premium experiences. Entrance fees to attractions like AlUla and museums range from $10–50, while desert safaris and diving trips can cost $100–200 per person.

Visitors to Saudi Arabia must obtain a visa, except if they come from one of the visa-exempt countries.

All visitors must have a passport with at least 6 months of validity.
The nationals of Israel are not allowed entry to Saudi Arabia.
