The Philippines is a melting pot of cultures influenced by its Spanish, American, and Asian heritage. The Philippines covers 300,000 square kilometres and has a population of over 113 million. Manila, the capital, is the country’s economic and cultural centre, while Cebu and Davao are also major urban hubs. Tourism thrives in hotspots like Boracay, Palawan, and Cebu, while Manila offers a glimpse into the nation's modern and historical roots. The Philippines is a democratic republic operating on Philippine Standard Time (GMT+8). 

Filipino cuisine is a unique blend of sweet, sour, and savoury flavours. Signature dishes include adobo, meat marinated in vinegar and soy sauce; sinigang, a tangy tamarind-based soup, and kare-kare, oxtail peanut stew. Street food, such as balut and isaw, grilled chicken intestines, is popular among locals. The country does not have a strong wine culture, but locally produced lambanog, coconut liquor and palm wine are traditional beverages. The Philippines is also known for its world-class Barako coffee and sweet mangoes from the tropics.

The Philippines offers a treasure trove of outdoor adventures. Surfing hotspots include Siargao and La Union, while hikers can conquer Mount Pulag, the Banaue Rice Terraces or Mount Apo, the country’s highest peak. Dive into the crystal-clear waters of Coron or snorkel with whale sharks in Oslob. Island hopping is a must in Palawan and Siargao, where you can explore hidden lagoons, white-sand beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. Thrill-seekers can surf in Cloud 9 or kiteboard in Boracay.

The Philippines boasts an abundance of natural wonders, including tropical rainforests, volcanoes and marine life. The Taal Volcano in Batangas and Mayon Volcano in Bicol are among the most scenic in the world. The Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park is a diver's dream, with its thriving marine life and coral gardens. Filipinos celebrate life with colourful and lively festivals. The Sinulog Festival in Cebu and the Ati-Atihan Festival in Aklan celebrate Indigenous and Spanish influences with street dances and parades. Panagbenga Festival in Baguio features elaborate flower floats, while the Pahiyas Festival in Lucban showcases houses decorated with colourful rice wafers. During the Holy Week, towns host dramatic reenactments of the Passion of Christ. Christmas is a magical season, with festivities starting as early as September.

Vaccinations for hepatitis A, B, C, rabies, measles typhoid, tuberculosis, Japanese encephalitis and routine immunisations are recommended.  Sexually transmitted diseases are prevalent in the country, so extra precautions are recommended. Carry sunscreen and insect repellent to protect against sunburn and mosquito bites. Stay hydrated in the tropical heat and ensure you drink bottled water. Comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended, should there be any medical emergency.

The Philippine Peso (PHP) is the official currency.

Transportation in the Philippines includes jeepney, buses, planes and ferries for island transfers and cruises. Domestic flights are the quickest way to move around, given that Philippines is an archipelago.

Filipino and English are the official languages.

Filipinos are indirect communicators and are often influenced by the need to always save face. The Filipinos value respect for both elders, authority and women. It is allowed to ask personal questions if they are not related to finances and achievements. Always take off your shoes before entering a  Filipino home. Conservative dressings are recommended, especially for females.

Mid-range travellers might spend $80–150 daily, enjoying boutique hotels and guided tours. Luxury travellers can budget $200 or more per day for high-end accommodations and private experiences. Domestic flights cost $30–100 while island-hopping tours range from $20–50 per person.
